Thrice-crowned National Basketball Association Most Valuable Player Nikola Jokic suffered a "gut-wrenching" knee injury while the Nuggets were defeated 147-123 against the Miami Heat.

The Serbian center injured himself towards the end of the second quarter during an unintentional coming together with fellow Nugget Spencer Jones.

Jones came down on the footwear of Jokic, who immediately fell to the court clutching his leg.

The 30-year-old, that is leading the league this season in boards and dimes, had a score of 21 points and eight dimes in the matchup prior to sustaining the setback.

Jokic will have an scan on the following day to evaluate the severity of the problem.

"Immediately, he knew something was wrong," commented Denver coach David Adelman.

"This is part of the NBA. Any player who is injured, it's gut-wrenching, most notably a player as talented as Jokic. More information will come tomorrow."

"The team will adjust together. Obviously, right now, I'm focused just about Jokic as a person and the frustration of going through something like that."
