The Owls Hit with 12-Point Deduction After Filing for Administration

The club's fans labeled Wednesday as “one of the most bittersweet days in our 158-year history” after the team entered financial administration under owner Dejphon Chansiri with a 12-point penalty imposed.

Club Crisis Results in Deduction

The Owls now face almost certain relegation after the EFL’s penalty left them on -6 points, 15 adrift of safety. Players and staff experienced delayed wages over recent months, compounding the period of turbulence.

Administrator Begbies Traynor are now in charge of the process aiming to sell club assets, including the team's home ground, to settle outstanding debts including tax liabilities. Soon after the club entered administration, seats spelling out Chansiri were taken down in the stadium.

“Entering administration was the inevitable outcome of years of financial mismanagement, poor oversight, and unsuccessful sale attempts,” the Sheffield Wednesday Supporters Trust said. “Administration is not something to be celebrated. It needn’t have ended this way. But we are overjoyed to have Dejphon Chansiri out of our club for good

Manager’s Perspective on Fresh Start

Sheffield Wednesday's coach, Henrik Pedersen met the administrators along with his coaching team, players, and staff early Friday. The Dane said administration was required to embark on a new era.

The manager emphasized “a sad situation can also still be a good day”, adding: “Recent months showed the situation was unsustainable. A reboot is needed to unlock the club's potential. Now optimism and hope for brighter days prevail. When I close my eyes, I can see a bright future for Sheffield Wednesday

Employee Concerns

Club staff were emotional upon hearing the update, with Pedersen saying: “Uncertainty exists. Will wages be paid? What happens now? Will it be better? Or won't they? Overall, there's hope for a shared future with the club.”

Continuing Money Problems

The club's condition has been deteriorating sharply since the summer when the manager Danny Röhl and several key players departed following unpaid wages. The EFL expressed concern regarding financial health earlier this season.

Since then, the club have been living hand-to-mouth, applying all revenue such as solidarity payments to deal with debts. With reports of an imminent winding-up order from HMRC, it appears Chansiri ran out of options.

Insolvency Practitioner's Comments

A lead administrator, Kris Wigfield from the insolvency firm stated: “Like many football clubs, [Wednesday] has been trading at a significant loss for several years, previously covered by the owner. Because of mounting money troubles, the owner has chosen to place the club into administration which will enable us to market the club and the stadium as a whole, a positive development for fans.”

Government Reaction

Government official Lisa Nandy said Wednesday’s plight served as another reminder the importance of a football regulator, recently legislated. The regulator is expected to be in operation for the start of the 2027-28 season.

“Having been in this position with my own team, Wigan Athletic, I know everyone who loves the club will be hoping for a resolution as soon as possible,” Nandy said.

Fan Response

Supporters have boycotted the club’s retail and merchandise in recent months with many absent from their home fixture against Middlesbrough in the latest boycott. Ahead of the Oxford game, the administrator and the supporters’ trust called on fans to reengage.

“The club’s most urgent need is stability and income, the trust said. Protest succeeded; rebuilding starts today. Each purchase and visit supports recovery. Meaningful change is possible if we act. It's time to back the team.”

What Lies Ahead

The trust anticipates buyer interest while developing a supporter-backed purchase plan guaranteeing “liquidation remains off the table”.

Pedersen, previously assistant to Röhl, hasn't accepted demotion despite the tough situation. “We must modernize while honoring tradition, he stated. We have a fantastic club and it deserves to grow. I'm confident we can stay up. The fight continues.”
