The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Selected the Wrong Critical Role Track

This latest animated series, the most recent animated series from the beloved role-playing group, revealed a new introductory sequence. It features our favorite cast of misfits, misfits, and criminals kicking ass and taking names, while also hinting at multiple agonizing personal histories for characters such as Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and another actor's warlock orc, the character Fjord.

Overall, the opening looks amazing. However, I felt that something was missing in the song choice.

This sequence employs "Welcome to the Continent", an exceptional composition created by artist Colm McGuinness. It's a track from the soundtrack album of that title, the second one released by the production company's music division their music brand. It's a great sentimental option, and I believe that fans of the sequel series will love its presence.

But for me, The Mighty Nein's intro fails to capture the hype and excitement that was part of the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by singer-songwriter the artist, became an immediate hit in my view when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it only got better when co-founder Sam Riegel added lyrics to the tune for the animated Campaign 2 opening in the later year.

Featuring vocals from one actress, Laura Bailey, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the song was catchy and fun. Back then, I hadn't even watched the follow-up series at that point, but this was such an earworm that I kept it on my phone. This track that excites you before you start an episode of fantasy hijinks.

The Mighty Nein's intro with "the new song" doesn't strike the same chords in my opinion. It's a grand piece of music, but from what I know of the group, I can't help but feel that its mood is a little off.

Of course, the creators has stated that the animated show will have some changes and differences from the actual-play campaign. An adjusted mood for its intro appears as one of them.

This animated adventure will be available to watch on the streaming service from Nov. 19. If you can't wait before that, or wish to prepare to learn about the personas of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are accessible on Spotify and the video site.
