The English Team to Start UEFA Euro 2028 Journey at Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium
England’s men’s team will embark on their UEFA Euro 2028 adventure at the Manchester City’s stadium, on the condition that they achieve the relatively straightforward passage for a championship hosted across the majority of the UK and the Republic of Ireland.
Manchester City’s home ground has not hosted an England men’s fixture since May 2016, when Turkey were beaten 2-1 in a friendly, but is expected to stage the Three Lions for their opening fixture on Saturday 10 June 2028.
The team are scheduled to play their final two group matches at the national stadium, but, should they win the preliminary round, their knockout stage opener would take place at the Newcastle stadium. Securing the runner-up spot would mean starting the knockouts at Everton’s ground.
Competition Opening and Demonstration
The championship was inaugurated at an ceremony in a London landmark on Wednesday night. Senior figures from the tournament organizers and the organizing bodies were heckled as they entered the venue by about 50 pro-Palestine demonstrators, who demanded Israel to be expelled from global football because of the Gaza crisis.
Placards were raised with slogans stating “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while demonstrators called out: “Kick Israel out.”
Tournament Schedule
The opening game of the tournament will be played at the the national stadium of Wales in Cardiff, on June 9, 2028, a match that will include the Dragons if they secure a place.
Wembley Stadium will host both semi-finals and the final, which will be played on Sunday 9 July with a commencement at 5:00 PM.
It is expected that an earlier kick-off, which will also be implemented for European club finals from next season, will attract family audiences and help engage a more diverse set of fans.
Host Nations
The Republic of Ireland are scheduled to play their initial fixture at the Aviva Stadium and Scotland would play similarly at the national stadium of Scotland.
All four host countries’ teams will enter the qualification process; two reserved places will be set aside for any that fail to qualify for the finals through the qualification path.
Venues and Playoffs
Villa Park and Spurs’ ground finalize the nine host stadiums. Each one will hold at least one knockout match, with the quarter-finals held at the national stadium of each host.
The qualification draw will be held in Belfast, which was dropped as a tournament location last year when it became clear Casement Park could not be upgraded in time, on 6 December 2026.
Tournament Vision
“This will be a competition for the supporters and a showcase of everything we cherish about the football – its fervor and ability to unite individuals.”
In excess of three million admissions, a record for a Euro tournament, are expected to be released to supporters.
