The Details Known Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident

No fewer than 16 people were killed and over 40 sustained injuries when assailants shot at a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, an attack local police are describing as a act of terrorism.

As of the newest reports, officials have confirmed the number of fatalities is 16, which includes one of the alleged attackers. Additionally, 42 wounded individuals were taken to hospital.

The victims are yet to be publicly named, but authorities state their ages range between 10 and 87 years of age.

Below are the individuals who have been identified to date.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Reportedly a father of five children, he was the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She recounted the events before the shooting, explaining they had been standing together when the gunfire began. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.

The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had later relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Officially, the Foreign Minister said that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the message continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was a fatality during the attack, as per multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospital, many remain receiving treatment, with a number in critical condition. Those hurt include two officers who responded to the attack.

One of the injured is a bystander who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Described as a hero, he received gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. It has been reported he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he recounted the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He said he heard “a large number” of shots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
