LA Faces Unprecedented High Temperatures Only One Week Following Severe Winter Weather.
After enduring torrential rains that resulted in floodwaters across parts of the city, the City of Angels is now confronting unseasonably warm weather for the end of February.
Record-Setting Heat
On Friday midday, the temperature soared to 91°F (33°C) in central LA, according to meteorologists. This exceeds the old record for this date, which was 31 degrees Celsius (88 Fahrenheit) and was set in the previous year.
"Unusually high temperatures" were highlighted on NWS graphics for the region.
Safety Alerts
Forecasters cautioned that Friday's conditions posed an "higher threat for heat illness" for people sensitive to heat. Their recommendations featured:
- Staying hydrated.
- Avoiding outdoor activities during the peak heat of the day.
- Ensuring you do not leave children or pets unattended in a car.
A Dramatic Shift
This sharp rise in mercury comes on the heels of a intense winter storm that pummeled the area last week. That system delivered thunderstorms, high winds, and heavy snow to mountainous regions, triggering evacuation orders for millions residents.
Sadly, the conditions also caused a massive avalanche in the Lake Tahoe area, which left nine people dead from.
Forecast Ahead
Looking ahead cooler conditions will arrive. The heat were predicted to drop to around 61°F (16°C) in the city by Friday night.
Additional areas that reached ninety degrees included Burbank, Woodland Hills, and Long Beach. Elsewhere, Westwood, Camarillo, Santa Maria, and Oxnard were projected to experience the upper eighties.
In the coming days, downtown Los Angeles can anticipate readings in the eighties, with cooler weather expected for the week ahead.
