Jair Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.

The one-time leader was sentenced of plotting a government overthrow in last fall and handed more than 27 years in jail, but he continued under house arrest pending appeals.

Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" emerged.

This involved attempting to break his tracking device and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a potential flight.

Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears

In a filing authorising the custody, Justice Moraes said data from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's aim to disable the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his escape.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his son.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a legislator, called for a assembly of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.

His son wrote on social media on last Friday: Will you battle for your country, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your settee? I invite you to battle with us."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Context of Sentencing

The former president was found guilty of leading a conspiracy aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a plan which involved plans to assassinate his opponent and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.

The conspiracy was prevented because it couldn't obtain the backing of the military leaders. Lula was took office without issue on January 1st, 2023.

But a week later, on the eighth of January, thousands of his followers invaded and destroyed official structures in the national capital, Brasília.
