People have assembled throughout the country to mark two years since the Hamas-conducted offensive on 7 October 2023, as discussions proceeded in Egypt over a conclusion to the war in Gaza.

The incident saw over 1,200 people dead and 251 others taken back to Gaza as captives. It was the most most lethal day for Jews since the Second World War.

Israel responded by launching a armed campaign in Gaza which has claimed over 67,000 people, according to the territory's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its numbers are seen as accurate by the United Nations and other international bodies.

"Our bloodthirsty opponents have hit us hard, but they have not broken us," the leader remarked on that day.

He also promised to "achieve all the aims of the war: the release of all the kidnapped, the elimination of the Hamas administration and the assurance that Gaza will no longer create a risk to Israel".

Commemorative Ceremonies Across Israel

The government authorities delayed state remembrance events until 16 October - after the end of the Jewish High Holiday season - but events still occurred throughout the country on that day.

A memorial ceremony for the families of people who lost their lives in the Hamas attack was organized in the coastal city. Put together by the affected families, it was broadcast across Israeli television channels.

A period earlier, a moment of silence was held across the country.

Negotiation Discussions in Egypt

Simultaneously, both sides' negotiating teams gathered in the North African Red Sea resort of the Egyptian city for a continuing round of indirect talks to discuss the terms of the agreement.

A high-ranking Palestinian official involved in the discussions revealed that an late session of mediated discussions began at evening in Egypt.

The source said the day's discussions ended without significant progress, due to conflicting views over the suggested Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas wants to ensure Israel does not restart hostilities after the first phase of the deal.

He noted that the discussions are "challenging and have not yet deliver any real breakthrough," but pointed out that mediators are striving to narrow the disparities between the two sides.

Essential Issues in Negotiations

  • A permanent truce
  • The exchange of the captives still held by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
  • The removal of troops from Gaza
  • Measures for assistance deliveries
  • Future governance of the area

Public Reaction

In the city's public square previously, young Hagar - whose brother lived through the incident on the Nova music festival, where 378 people were lost their lives and numerous more were taken hostage by Hamas gunmen - told: "Nowhere feels like home anymore and until every captive are released no one will be secure."

"After we see everyone home again, we can feel relief once more. Then we can start to heal," she concluded.

In front of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's residence in the capital, people assembled to express their solidarity for the relatives of the captives. Israel says 48 stay in confinement in Gaza, 20 of whom are thought to be surviving.

Demonstrator Atalia Regev explained: "It's necessary do every compromise necessary for the abducted to come back home. But we really want guarantees that we will be safe."

Research now regularly indicate that around the majority of Israeli citizens desire the hostilities to conclude in exchange for the release of the captives.

Palestinian Circumstances

At the location of Nova festival, those paying respects came together to honor the dead.

From that location, the noise of aerial bombardments and shelling could be heard just a brief space away in Gaza, where witnesses reported the intense Israeli shelling carried on.

In Gaza City, air and artillery strikes were noted in the early hours of that day in the western Tal al-Hawa, sector and locality districts and in the east side area of the community, as well the settlement to the north-west.

"Once the dusk arrives, the anxiety comes with it," evacuated Gaza City resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose 17-year-old son was killed by an Israeli air strike last year, described.

"My family are fearful of the attacks. Throughout the evening we are sleeping together, clinging, notably my smallest child who puts his face on me all night."

"Continuously we check the news to see the situation. And I'm afraid that this truce will not be completed and that the war will return to us."

Humanitarian Emergency

Al-Shifa hospital in the urban area reported it had taken in the corpses of six people by the daytime, including a trio killed in an Israeli attack in the southern district.

Nasser hospital in the southern city of the city reported additional fatalities had been delivered. One of them was lost his life by Israeli troops while looking for help to the south region, health workers reported.

The region's health ministry reported 25 of the {territ
