A renowned South African radio and club DJ has been fatally gunned down in the nation's economic hub Johannesburg, sending shockwaves across a nation grappling with rampant crime.

Warrick Stock, who went by the name DJ Warras, was attacked in the central business district on the afternoon of Tuesday.

Authorities reported the 40-year-old media personality was accosted by three suspects, with one began shooting at him before fleeing on foot.

The motive behind the shooting has not been established and no arrests have taken place, police said.

The Fatal Incident

Authorities revealed that Stock was targeted as he was leaving a premises near the Carlton Centre.

He had devoted time at the building overseeing the installation of safety equipment, which had been controversially occupied by unknown people, as per local media.

"The report indicates the man was approached by three unidentified men after he parked his car, and they opened fire at him before fleeing the scene on foot," an official report confirmed.

Security camera video showed a individual with dreadlocks and dressed in what looked like a protective services outfit shooting on Stock before making his escape.

The DJ sought to escape after he was hit but succumbed to his injuries a short distance away.

It was further revealed that Stock had an unused firearm and nothing was taken during the incident.

Important clues, like cartridges, were discovered at the scene.

Call for Public Assistance

Officials are asking anyone who saw the event who may have seen the suspects to contact them.

"We know they walked a long distance after the attack, and officers have been tracking them to determine their destination," stated a police chief.

His family member, Nicole Stock, said the family was struggling to process his death.

"Words fail me. I am shattered," she said.

A political leader said the "brazen murder of DJ Warras in the middle of the day is a trauma for all South Africans".

A media executive noted that "Stock was not merely a TV personality. He was a talented storyteller, a dedicated enthusiast of music and a warm soul who brought happiness and vitality to every moment on screen. His commitment to his craft left an indefinable mark."

In a communication, the network he worked for said Stock was known for his charisma, approachability and sharp wit, adding that his memory "will endure".
