Eurovision Used to Be a Lighthearted Spectacle – Yet It Has Transformed Into a Calculated Tool to Sanitize Conflict.

An freshly coined initialism emerged several months after the start of the intensive bombing of Gaza by Israel. Referred to as WCNSF, it means “Injured child with no living relatives”. This designation is specific to Gaza, as stated by doctors like child health specialists. Ordinarily, it is unusual for medical staff to care for a minor who has lost their complete family. Yet, there has been nothing “normal” about the devastating conflict in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been obliterated and the number of children who have lost limbs exceeds that of any other region in the world. Nothing normal in scores of doctors returning from a devastated terrain with testimonies of children being intentionally shot at.

A Living Nightmare In Spite Of a Announced Cessation of Hostilities

Gaza remains an utter catastrophe. Essential medical supplies are not getting in those in need, and major human rights organizations contend that violations are still being committed. The Israeli government disputes these allegations, just as it denies all charges it is charged with. Yet as young survivors are now suffering from the cold in improvised encampments, there is a little heartwarming news: apparently nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from continuing with its stated mission of “togetherness and artistic sharing.” Organizers will continue to offer a welcoming platform for Israel, although at least four European countries have now withdrawn in objection. And this, apparently, is what global togetherness resembles.

Historically, Eurovision banned Russia from participating in 2022 due to the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. However, the situation in Gaza appears to be completely different.

A Double Standard

Forget the fact that Israel was alleged to have used questionable voting tactics last year in what appears to have been an bid to manipulate Eurovision. Set aside the news that a three-year-old girl was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza recently. Forget the fact that attacks by settlers and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Forget the fact that foreign reporters are still denied unfettered access in Gaza. All of this, it would seem, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.

The Pageant Proceeds While Ignoring Staggering Tragedy

The contest marks seven decades next year – almost double the average life expectancy of a person in Gaza at present. The show may go on, but it will likely never recapture the pure, unadulterated fun it historically embodied. A contest that was originally built on togetherness has now become a cynical way to sanitize military aggression.
