An Historic Occasion when Liam Rosenior Overcomes Barriers

"Rosenior represents an excellent manager that knows the game inside out, and that's what matters most.

"However, in my role as the Blues' pioneering black player, it would be dishonest if I said this news does not affect me."

These were the sentiments of Paul Canoville, the man who earned his groundbreaking debut for the Blues' first team off the bench in the spring of 1982.

This week, the club named RC Strasbourg manager Rosenior, aged 41, as their next manager following the exit of manager Enzo Maresca.

Strasbourg are part of a multi-club ownership group which also owns Chelsea.

There have been only 12 black managers – not including those in temporary caretaker positions – in the Premier League since it began thirty-four in the past.

"One thing that impresses me regarding Rosenior is that he grew up and developed his game not far from here, he understands this area," continued Canoville.

"When children see someone like Liam in charge of the team they support, someone they can identify with, who's from their ends, who comes from a family that champions what's right… it is profound and shows them that opportunities exist.

"So yes, this represents an enormous moment for Chelsea, for London, for every aspiring individual with big dreams.

"However, currently? Let's back Liam, give him the necessary tools, and let the man get on with the job."

What Does the Data Show?

Dutch legend Ruud Gullit became the Blues' manager back in the nineties and became the Premier League's first African heritage head coach.

Twelve years later, by 2008, Paul Ince was appointed as the pioneering black English manager in the Premier League after taking charge at Blackburn Rovers.

West Ham manager Nuno Espirito Santo currently stands as the only other present Premier League gaffer from a minority ethnic background.

The lack of managers of colour across the English game corresponds with an absence of representation in the boardroom.

According to the Black Footballers Partnership 2023 report, forty-three percent of top-flight players are from African or Caribbean heritage.

Yet, analysis by Kick It Out revealed only 3.2% of executive and leadership positions at most Premier League clubs are from minority ethnic backgrounds.

At first-team coaching level, based on data provided by 11 clubs, the figure is two percent.

For all coaching positions – including senior roles – from those same eleven clubs, the figure is five percent.

"He has undoubtedly broken barriers by virtue of his appointment as the Chelsea manager, and as an organization, we hope to see more of that," said the chief executive of Kick It Out Samuel Okafor.

"It is acknowledged that there exists loads of ability present in the black and underrepresented communities... aspiring coaches desire a chance to demonstrate what they can do. It is imperative to continue to striving to dismantle those barriers down."

Furthermore, Rosenior is set to become one of only four full-time English managers presently in the Premier League – alongside Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe as well as Scott Parker – which trails the continent's other big five leagues in terms of homegrown representation.

16 of the 20 first division coaches in Serie A are from Italy, 11 of the 20 in Spain, Twelve of the 18 in Germany and 10 of the 18 in France.

Current Blues caretaker manager Calum McFarlane commented: "I have no doubt every aspiring British coaches from an academy background are, to some degree regardless of allegiance, rooting for Liam.

"It is truly inspirational for up-and-coming British academy coaches to see someone land that job with that profile and everyone hopes he does really well."

Leroy Rosenior, Rosenior Sr., had a career with clubs such as West London clubs, the Hammers as well as Queens Park Rangers, and his managerial career peaked with a five-month spell in charge of the third-tier club Brentford FC back in 2006.

In 2019, he received a Member of the Order of the British Empire in that year's Honours List for services rendered in combating discrimination within the sport and beyond.

After Liam hung up his boots he pursued his father's footsteps. He started writing a column for a national newspaper, where in 2017 he acknowledged the under-representation of black coaches. He highlighted that race does not influence coaching skill arguing that roles should be given based on qualification.

He also made the view he would repeat: that vast under-representation leads to a failure to understand regarding footballers with diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

In a podcast for a football podcast, Rosenior highlighted how his star striker, Emmanuel Emegha, was labelled "hard to manage" and "passionate", but said he understood the Netherlands player with Nigerian parentage. Emegha is set to follow him in moving from Strasbourg to West London in July.

In subsequent Guardian columns, he also confessed he was "ashamed" to hear an unnamed staff member make a homophobic slur. He vowed his support for the Rainbow Laces initiative and authored a public message to Donald Trump during his first US presidency, accusing him of "overt" racism.

He has subsequently made his name as a manager – initially with Hull City, later at Strasbourg – with Wayne Rooney said this week Rosenior was "among the best coaches I've ever worked with" after their time together at Derby County.

Rosenior said his farewells to his former club on Tuesday morning prior to putting pen to paper on a six‑and‑a‑half‑year deal with the Blues.
