Afghan Rulers Utilized Abandoned British Technology to Locate Afghans Who Worked With Western Troops, Investigation Is Told
An informant has revealed an official investigation that the UK left behind classified devices allowing the Taliban to identify local individuals that had served with international military.
Information Leak Endangers Thousands in Danger
The whistleblower, called Person A, stated that individuals impacted by the data leak were told to change residences and change their phone numbers to protect themselves from militant forces.
Lawmakers are investigating the UK government's management of a serious breach of private information involving almost nineteen thousand individuals who had applied to move to the UK to avoid the regime.
Data Disclosure Occurred
A data file with their personal data, including identities, contact details and sometimes relative details, was accidentally leaked by a staff member stationed at British military command in early 2022.
The leak came to light only in August 2023, when the names of nine people who had sought to settle in Britain surfaced on online platforms.
Taliban Capabilities
Many believe there's a false assumption that the Taliban lack comparable resources that western nations possess,” Person A informed MPs.
All equipment was abandoned in Afghanistan; they possess it. If they have mobile details, they can trace your exact position. That's precisely what specialized teams accomplished.”
When questioned about whether the Taliban possessed advanced decryption, the source confirmed: “They have complete capability.”
Impact of the Information Leak
Initial findings provided to the committee estimated that approximately fifty kin and colleagues of individuals impacted by the breach had been killed.
A superinjunction about the leak was implemented in last year and restricted all details regarding the matter from media reporting until mid-2025.
Security Recommendations
Because she was restricted, the whistleblower and the volunteer organization she collaborated with told Afghan families they were working with that they had “concerns that somebody's phone had been breached”.
“Our suggestion was that they relocate when possible and altered their mobile numbers. Those were the primary information that, if the Taliban obtained such data, would cause them being traced,” she said.
Challenged Assessments
The whistleblower contested that internal investigation carried out by a former official had been incorrect to determine that the acquisition of the records by the regime was “minimally impact an individual's existing exposure”.
“The thing to remember is that affected people are not standing up to the authorities; they are in hiding. The primary issue involves their previous employment.”
The source explained disturbing violence experienced by at-risk Afghans, involving electrocution, waterboarding, and severe beatings.
“Instances include young kids who have had bones crushed to try to get the family to reveal locations,” Person A stated.
