A Limited-Edition Pokémon Card Seeks to Be Super Effective On Resellers

Marking the arrival of the fascinating new book Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology, an exciting partnership has been formed. Pokémon's creators alongside London's Natural History Museum are opening a pop-up shop stocked with exclusive items. Fans can look forward to offerings including plush toys, art prints, and writing supplies that are inspired by the museum's theme. For collectors, though, will be a limited-edition Pikachu card, offered as a free bonus for the pop-up. This shop is scheduled from the physical location to online from January 26 to April 19.

The Book That Inspires the Collaboration

Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology is a highly anticipated volume filled with beautiful illustrations that show creatures in their wild environments. The concept is what a Pokémon Professor could produce after trainers provide field notes, alternatively what Charles Darwin could have sketched if the famous islands were populated by Pidgeys instead of birds. Part of the charm stems from the book's scholarly approach, treating Pokémon as worthy of subject for study. Author Yoshinari Yonehara and artist Chihiro Kinoshita both hold doctorate degrees in ecology and behavioral science.

Why This Special Card Different

The company regularly for The Pokémon Company to release promos celebrating major tournaments or brand collaborations. Many of these collector items typically highlight the famous mouse Pokémon that acts as the series face. What distinguishes this latest promotion apart is its distinctly bigger size. Although precise specs were not immediately shared, its distribution is guaranteed to be strictly limited, and customers able to get just one card with each transaction.

Curbing Speculator Activity

According to a company statement, some of the pop-up items may also be available outside the museum walls. But, broader availability is slated for select retailers in the UK. Importantly, collectors will not be able to acquire this promo via the official web shop. While reseller interest is inevitable, it appears they're going to have a difficult time hoarding mass quantities on this occasion. For those unable to attend, consider the upcoming fossil-themed display headed to the Windy City later this year.

"All profits of sales from the Museum shop and from its web shop, including these items, go toward the Natural History Museum’s charitable mission. That encompasses the research of 400 scientists who are conducting studies and finding solutions to the planetary emergency," the statement says.
